Blood and Sympathy: the Monsters of Universal

They ruled the screen, starting in the 1930s, when real monsters walked the earth.

They were creatures of a different era – when audiences, like the ancient Greek theatergoers, were complex enough to know pity and fear in the same moment.

The next three entries are on three classic monsters, each from a different decade. The Mummy (1932), The Wolf Man (1941), and The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) span three continents, three decades, three tragic fates.

There are no happy endings. Only fitting ones.
